Structures and Strategies That Support Teaching and Learning in a Redesigned School

The Study Kit and Online Study Kit are companion pieces designed to work hand-in-hand to support redesign work. The Study Kit is a rich collection of print and multimedia materials and the Online Study Kit, catalogued using a system that correlates with the Study Kit, is both a stand-alone resource and a guide to help users easily find the materials they need in the Study Kit.

Who is it for?

Teachers, administrators, parents, students, and others who are designing or improving small learning communities. In addition, many of the resources in Online Study Kit may be of value to educators not yet redesigning but interested in improving teaching and learning in their school(s). In fact, introducing more powerful teaching and learning may create the need for a redesigned structure to support it.

What is it?

A collection of resources organized in four modules that cover some of the major areas that support effective small schools. Each resource is annotated in order to help you decide if it meets your needs. Because of the "outside-the-box" nature of school redesign and in order to facilitate the on-going development of resources responsive to the evolving needs of the field, Online Study Kit is web-based. The resources found here are just the beginning of a growing clearinghouse, which we hope you and other educators doing this important work will augment.

Teaching and Learning Resources – Module D
The complexities of redesigning large comprehensive high schools or creating new small high schools can easily lead educators to lose sight of the real goal of their efforts: effective teaching and learning for all students. Small is only a means to this end. This module provides resources for developing the following key features of teaching and learning found in successful small schools: Performance Assessment, High Standards, Literacy, Project-Based Learning, Community Service and Internships, and Multicultural and Anti-Racist Teaching.

Personalization Resources – Module E
Through personalization, all students can be known well and supported to achieve at high levels. To create such an environment, good small schools use multiple strategies and carefully consider how every aspect of their school affects personalized learning. Module E includes resources on the following: The Case for Personalization, Budgeting for Personalization, Staffing for Personalization, Scheduling for Personalization, Looping, and Advisory.

Teachers & Professional Community Resources – Module F
A school is a community--- a community with the specific purpose of educating children to be successful members of our democratic society. Small schools have been rethinking the relationships among the adults in the community to better reflect this purpose. The resources in this module explore how small schools are reorganizing to foster: shared forms of leadership; continuous professional development and collaboration; hiring and evaluation processes based on these principles; and the inclusion of families and the larger community in the life of the school.

System Support for School Redesign Resources – Module G
In order for small and redesigned schools to be sustainable in the long run, they need to be acknowledged and supported by the systems in which they operate. Innovative schools are often frustrated by union contracts, and district policies and budgets created for traditional models of schooling. In addition, school building designs often reflect similarly traditional assumptions. The resources in this module address: the District Role, District Initiatives and Requests for Proposals (RFPs), the Union Role, and Facilities.
